I’ve had a couple of normally aspirated RX-8s on the dyno over the last month. There seems to be about 12 hp in the mid range and 8 at peak rpm to be gained by leaning the stock .72ish lambda (10.6:1 A/F Gasoline) mixtures to about .85 lambda (12.5:1 A/F Gasoline). Leaning from there all the way to a lambda of 1 (14.7:1 A/F Gasoline) does not seem to produce any more power. The leaner you run the car, the higher the exhaust gas temperatures (and thus the less life you get from your cat) so it does not seem to make much sense running the cars any leaner than the .85 lambda range at high load and high rpm.

The above observations were from two quick dyno sessions. They are by no means a complete answer to normally aspirated RX-8 tuning. There may be more power to be had by playing with mixtures in the mid-rpm ranges.

I would welcome anyone else’s input here. Please let me know what you have found on the dyno.
